UNCG’s Glenwood Expansion
News Brief for 5/18/2011
UNCG plans to expand into the Glenwood neighborhood within the next few years. The university plan includes:
- a new police station
- residence halls
- mixed-use buildings for student residence and stores and restaurants
- A 225,000 square foot recreation center
The university has held several meetings with Glenwood residents over the past year, but the neighborhood is still skeptical of the plan. The president of the Glenwood neighborhood association told the News & Record that residents have a lot of concerns, number one being that UNCG will use eminent domain to continue to expand into Glenwood beyond this inital plan. Residents are also concerned about having to fight students for parking, and the large size of the new recreation facility.
UNCG has altered its initial proposal significantly to accommodate some of residents suggestions. According to Mike Byers, UNCG’s vice chancellor for campus enterprises, the university plans draw up an official agreement with the Glenwood neighborhood once the final plan has been negotiated. This would be the first such agreement between UNCG and a bordering neighborhood.
